Smoke alarms
There are a number of smoke alarms available, but by far the best are usually those offered as a part of a home security package. There are a few reasons why these alarms are best to use.
• They are monitored – With these alarms, not only does your home’s alarm go off, but the alarm is also sent to the monitoring group. This means they will dispatch the fire department straight to your home, perhaps even before you could make the call. This is an extra security measure.
• Detect carbon smoke – One of the things more sophisticated smoke alarms do is detect carbon smoke. This is the smoke that comes from actual substances burning. This means if there is a cabinet or electrical pipes burning, the alarm will be set off. On the other hand, if there is cigarette smoke or burnt toast in your home, the alarm recognizes that this is not carbon smoke and does not go off.
Regardless of whether you get sophisticated smoke alarms or not, it is important to have at least some kind of smoke alarm in your home. In most places, this is required by code.
